Breeding Altum Angels.

I have 8 2 year in captivity Altums. They are in with stingrays, and some Tiger Silver dollars in a 600 gallon tank. Lately I have a couple that have paired up.

I have been advised that breeding these guys is going to be almost impossible and I essentially have no shot ..but hey I am up for the challenge. Aside from a second tank for the pair what else am I going to need? Any thoughts on tank size for a breeding pair (if I can manage to separate them) and what I am going to have to do to make this breeding happen?

I'd be cautious moving the pair to another tank. If they are moved they might not feel comfortable enough to spawn. It might be best to get them to lay eggs in the main tank and remove the eggs to another tank.

I have no personal experience with altums just wild angels. Once I separated my pair they became so timid and shy.

That would be idea. I have just heard Altums won't spawn under normal water conditions.

I've only bred regular captive bred angels in past, but I always find a piece of high angled slate in the tank works well as a breeding substrate. It is also easy to move to a hatching/rearing tank. Good luck with the project!

Theo could you ask your asian contacts? Surely someone know how to breed them and the breeders in North America seem to be pretty tight lipped. For sure Altums are not like normal Angels.

If it is that much of a trade secret then I doubt I will have much luck asking my breeder contacts. I will try though. :)

Along with slate, maybe put in a few vertical bamboo pieces?

Ya good call on the water conditions. 600 gallons of ro water would be unreasonable. Maybe move a group into another tank, like a 90 gallon or something.

One of my supplier from Vietnam breed Altum and he never mentioned anything to me. It is very secretive but he did said it take years to be able to breed them. Good luck!
