Sick Royal Pleco

9" L330, plump and active stopped eating three days ago, colour became lighter, and he's been breathing rapidly ever since. I increased the air agitation.

He's the only pleco in a 175 tank with lots of hiding spots, one 16" XB, and one 6" NTT that totally ignore it.

Temp is 81*, PH 7.6, Ammonia 0 ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm, Nitrate 20 ppm. Water changes, 50% every second day. Filtration is two Eheim canisters, a 2250, and 2262 alternately rinsed every 8 months.

His diet has consisted of Hikari wafers, zucchini, and sweet potato.

He just hides out hyper ventilating, any ideas of what could be happening here ?

Sounds like it may have gill flukes. Alternatively it could have something stuck in its gills. If you keep plants in in pots containing rockwool some of that could have stuck in the fishes gills.

Possible remedy for gill flukes would be PraziPro.

Hi Indostomus,

On the forth day he started coming out displaying better colour, and no more hyperventilating, but still heavy breathing. He also had off white feces which had me pick up some PraziPro.

After 50% water changes every second day, increased aeration, and PraziPro he is now back to normal and eating like a pig !

Thanks for your input.

P.S. No plants in the tank.
