Outside of seeing that the fish has already "turned", I can not think of a sure-fire way. It is here that the element of trust and reputation of the farm or store come into play I think.

just wondering as i got a super red cert date sept 06 and i dont like it that much but it was the only aro in the tank without bad PLJ the other aros had much better color but my pet hates are PLJ and drop eye
gold aros are easy when young you just look for shine levels and pearls with red its harder as sooo much changes with age

Does your red have color on its cheeks yet? Buying a red a little like gambling...
Not to be racist or anything, but I get the impression that Asian people go for red, "white" people go for gold (RTGs for asian don't count, as usually people start off with those because they are more affordable).
