Beware Asian arowana scams

I've had some communication with an Asian arowana farmer in Singapore who is very experienced. I pass on some of his advice to anyone looking to get a "cheap" Asian arowana, or perhaps one from a less than trusted source:

1. Green aros and hybrids of green/gold when kept in white fiber tanks becomes very attractive and pass off as very high quality X-Backs (Platinum, Gold Heads, Emerald X-Backs, etc). Don't be fooled by such going-ons.

2. The past few months have seen a lot of Reds from Indonesia being offered at very low prices. Buyers of these fish now know why! They are wiser but poorer. These fish came into S'pore with fancy names like Fire Red etc but after being kept by hobbyists their colour slowly goes away. Now they know that these fish are not 100% Reds but hybrids of Banjar and Reds, treated with chemicals in their water so that they appear very red and attractive. Such practises by Indonesian traders are nothing new as they have happened time and again over the years

And so as always, it is a case of buyer beware...

Always a good idea to get it from the older and more established farms in Singapore- you cannot go wrong there. Also this fancy name calling is something one has to watch out for, a red is a red is a red. Dressing up aros with colourful names will fool inexperienced hobbyists.
