It's very common for the male to try. IMO, it's much more about the female being ready. I watched my older male try unsuccessfully for about 6 months before the female took. It is as they say... "practice makes perfect" :)

To an extent, but other factors (like maturity) come into play too. This female is close to two feet across, so she's pretty damn big.

Actually I did know she was knocked up the last time, she was visibly huge. I'm 99% she's knocked up again, she's showing all the signs but too early to confirm. If she is, I will have a second litter (hopefully more than 1 this time!) sometime in August.
