I think that as long as the heater is covered on all sides by water there should be enough water for a correct caliberation.

If I remember correctly they are very deep ocean fish which is why there aren't many caught.

Another thing you could look at is what the chemical you are trying to get rid of is, and see if there is some other alternative to safe. I have seen chloromine and chlorine removers in powder form I think so you could always ask the manufacturers if it is stable to premix.

Could you T off the return and have that water going back into your sump? Might reduce any stress from restricting the return hose, and could be used to put a uv or something else in there? Just an idea?
