I visited a fun little koi shop in the Dutch countryside, not far from Utrecht. The owner, Jos, has been importing Asian arowana for a few years now. He has visited Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. While he once imported from Singapore, he now imports exclusively from Indonesia and Malaysia. The fish you see in the photos come from Elkindo and Sianlon.
Jos looks set to expand his sales in new directions (exotic rays, other aro tank mates), but his "bread and butter" is definitely koi. He has made hundreds of trips to Japan in his 30 years of business importing and selling koi. Today he even breeds his own koi for sale. Jos offers a broad range of landscaping and aquascaping products and services. While I was visiting him, he excused himself to go check on his pumps in his field. He hopped on a Dutch style bicycle and zoomed off into the countryside. His wife explained he had to do this every afternoon. As I watched him in the distance tending his pump in the middle of a pasture, framed by a Dutch pastoral setting, I thought to myself, this is indeed an unusual setting for a major Asian arowana shop....
My apologies for the poor quality of many photos. The tanks are kept in converted greenhouses and so the reflection from the glass was hard to factor out of photos.
I just noticed that the resizing of the photos was too small.
I will try to fix that later.
