my newest fish has his back end dropping and he sinks a bit then straightens out.

any idea whats going on? I've never seen this before in the aros i've grown out.

i've done a 50% water change, added another established filter, and put some salt into the tank.

any other suggestions?

thanks

Ph level?

Your aro is probably just scared or not fully adjusted to your tank. They act like that when frightened.

How do you do water changes? Do you add a water conditioner (I use Prime)? As asked above, what are the water parameters: pH, ammonia and so on.

Has the aro been like this since it arrived? If so, try the following fast. Put the fish in a suitably sized tank (20-30 gallons) and drop the water level extremely low, right down to about 3-4 inches. Make sure it stays heated. Keep light very low. Feed as normal. Keep water normal around 6.5 Ph.
You basically want the fish to rest on the tank bottom as much as possible. Maintain the treatment for at least a week.

The above treatment was recommended by Mr.Kan of Panda Aquatics and proved useful on two occasions for other people who ordered aros somewhere on the prairies. The treatment worked on those occasions.

If your aro developed this swimming posture some time after arrival to you, then I don't know what to suggest.

Is it eating well?

pH is 7

I hope that is the case

I do it with a python and use prime as the conditioner

It was fine up until yesterday. I will try lowering the water level

Sounds like Swimming Bladder Problem (SBP), can you post a picture to confirm...

I will try and get some pictures when I get home from work

Thanks everyone

Tim

if it was swim bladder the tail would be up head down

if the aro is new just give it some time to settle

do you have strong current in the tank

I remember when I got my RTG's and they were still in the bag, there was 3 of them that are literally standing up, about 80 degrees from the ground. To confirm that it is just an environment adjustment thing observe your aro from far (and nobody near the tank) for a while with out him noticing you, see if he will act the same way or does he only lower his behind when your right in front of the tank. I don't think it's SBP. SBP is the other way around, head is down and not the tail. SBP you treat it with low water level in your tank and increase temp.

that seems like one of my aro it does the same thing after every water change.
I think your aro is just scared of its new enviroment and is thinking of jumping.

Yes, I think Arl and T1 are correct and it is not a SBP. If you decide that it is, though, then follow the suggestion passed on by Mr.Kan to me.

In the end you will be the one to make the judgement call.

I've just added a bit of current to keep him swimming

He will act like this from afar. I've lowered the tank level to about 2.5" and the temp is slowly being raised

I don't think he's thinking about jumping unfortunatly

I don't think its SBP either. Lowering the water is allowing me to control the current better which is keeping him upright. :)

Just sounds like hes adjusting. :)

He is improving :)

I think the tank went thru a mini cycle when I pulled a piece of driftwood out of the tank. The tank was then completely bare which would have set off a spike. After a few water changes, raise in temp, lowering of water, fooling with current, adding salt he is acting alot more normal after. He is still drpping the back end a bit, but not as much as before

aros that are not too familiar or new to their surroundings will often get it. 2 of my 3 super reds i got from the panda order did this for a few weeks. after that, it was fine. its not the swim bladder. nothing to worry about. i did lower the water level to 50%. thats all it takes for the aro to feel comfortable. too much current is no good as well. causes the small aros to tire out which will result in the aro resting on the bottom (from my experience at least)

Sounds like that might be it

He is still improving which is nice

Thanks for all the suggestions and the help everyone. I've never experienced this before so it was a bit of a suprise when it happened. :)

Looks like things are still getting better.
The one thing that kept me from panicing was his eyes remained alert so I figured he should recover.

Thanks for the tips and reassurance once again
