i have a 110 gallon tank on the 2nd floor of the living room and now i am thinking of upgrading to a 180 gallon...can the 2nd floor support the weight of a 180 gallon tank?? the tank is beside the wall where it divides the kitchen and the living room

depends on what your house has for joists and trusses. I currently have my 180g in my room in my bedroom and i have no issues, maybe do a little research to see what you got for wood and let us know :) and maybe the age of the house and such?

its a brand new house... its a hard wood floor if thats what you meant by wood other than that i know nothing about it...thanks for your reply

hmm ok not sure what they use for floor joists in new houses, but if you can find out what way the joists are running? the type of joist? (ex: TJI trusses or 2x8s or 2x6s...) and the centers of those joists that would be perfect.

for example in my house i have 11" TJIs at 16" centers and i put my tank adjacent to a load bearing wall across 3. each of the joists in my house have a shearing strength close to around 1500lbs so i'm safe. the 9" TJIs for example only have about 1200lbs of shearing strength per joist but keep in mind other forces such as where the weight is and etc. it you have 2x8s at 21" centers i would think you would still be fine but its with these new fancy alternatives i'd be worried. either way look at your house prints and call a mech eng(or talk to one you know). they should be able to answer your questions and more. better yet if you want to be double sure talk to the manufacturer of the joist (if manufactured of course lol) and they should tell you everything

hth :)

i talked to the builder he say's its too heavy to put it on the 2nd floor.... how much weight is a 180 fill with water anyways?

roughly, 1 gallon = 10 lbs..

Also unless you know for sure, its pretty safe to bet that the builders went with "minimum" mandatory req's, which in canada is 16" between floor supports..

Your 180g tank with stand and rocks and filters will weigh well over 2000 lbs if fully filled..

You can put wood under the stand to spread out the weight over more floor beams, that is what I do with my 180g on third floor of wooden building..

However I only fill my tank half - 2/3rds full..

hmmm...if i put it in the 1st of the living room (which is kinda small) i can just add some support from the basement right? somehow i jusst want to get a 180g tank lol and i am not gonna have any rocks and stuff just an aro and few fishes
