Physical differences between male and females?

thats a great question.

given the many varieties and possible sub species, I have some idea's but nothing is confirmed.

some think males are "longer" while females are "taller"

I have speculated that perhaps one of the subspecies is really a female (or vice versa)
ie, top fin red stripe or spotted body phoenix may not be subspecies after all but just different sex..

Yes i have noticed similar differences...

The one i have the previous owner said was a female (longer head, no spots on body and dull dorsal fin) whereas males were suspected to have a higher more sloping head, dots on the body and jet black dorsal fin...
