I have been planning to buy captive bred rays for some time, either leos, bd/leos or bd's. But then along comes Oliver Lucanus to Vancouver...and so now I am planning to buy a wild BD from him. Looking at the photos of Oliver's wild BD's, I think the one I am interested in looks a bit different from the other captive bred "BD's" around. And so that got me wondering - how do BD's differ from F1 to F2 and beyond? Do wild caught BD's in general have colour and/or pattern characteristics that differ from the captive bred BD's out there? Assuming there are differences, are these due to the different collection locations of the rays? And of course the care taken by captive breeding operation to maintain blood lines?
What are the different colour characteristics and natural pattern variations for BD's? I know a little about doughnuts, belly spotting, peripheral spotting at disc edge, etc., but some of these wild BD's remind me of what I think are called King Henlei? I am curious to know if anyone has actually categorized wild BD's by type?
While I could save some money buying a pair of captive bred BD's or BD/leos from Thailand or Indonesia, I think the "cool" factor of having a wild caught fish that actually comes from the Amazon is hard to beat.
