Barebottom vs Sand for Breeding

Does anyone think it makes a difference for ray breeding purposes if the rays are born and raised on sand or barebottom when it comes to breeding.
I've noticed that my rays that have been on barebottom thier whole lives have developed a different muscular structure than my rays that were raised on sand. Now in the case of females my rays that have been on barebottom thier whole lifes are the ones that are not getting knocked up even thou males that have bred with quite abit larger rays are trying. It looks like the females have got very good at keeping thier discs more like a half dome than flat when the male goes to breed them not allowing him to bite them and try and get under. I'm wondering also if there was sand would it be easier for the males to push/blow the sand away from the disc edge exposing enough for them to grasp onto.
Any thoughts?

What your saying makes a lot of sense. I would tend to say i agree with it before i would say that it doesn't make a difference.

I've never seen anything brought up about this which kinda surprises me.
I'm still amazed at how different the muscular development on the rays are.

hmm interesting info. i never noticed dif muscle grown on rays kept in bare bottom vs substrate. great topic!!! i learn something every day from the veterans on here!

You may not notice unless you have had the rays on barebottom for a few years. The rays I have moved from substrate to barebottom have taken near that to see how thier muscles have changed and the bigger they are the easier it is to notice. You will notice they are alot more muscular further away from the middle of thier backs towards the disc edge opposed to rays on substrate which seem more musular towards the middle. Maybe this is only my rays and it was a learned method of dealing with slippage on the barebottom from one ray to another.
Has anyone else noticed this muscular difference on thier rays?

I also ways thought my rays looked more muscular yes...

A ray on sand doesnt have to work as hard as a ray on a bare bottom, thats for sure. But either way, they dont seam to mind it.

It only makes sense that the repetitive motion, and the extra work is building extra muscle.

lol just like working out. i guess its good that they are on bare bottom then. the amount of food i feed my rays, its best they get the extra work out!!!
