gravel verse no gravel on bottom of tank

haha, the algae problem has been cut in half since that pic i swear!

But i cant get rid of the algae off the plants, considered introducing shrimp, but theyd be gone before they hit the water. Otos are out of the question too.

I am 100% sure wild aro get drop eye as well, I'll find a pic of wild caught green showing drop eye, and definately wild caught silvers showing drop eye as well.

I think its genetic..

Personally, I like bare bottom tank.. easy to clean, looks nice..

you say aros get DE in the wild mmmmmmm maybe but they wouldnt get much food if they had DE in the wild

in the wild the water is not clear like in our tank its milky even in breeding ponds the water is not clear

we all know aros swim on the water surface looking for food trust me a aro in the wild or pond would not be able to see any food if it hit the floor in a pond like it would in a clear water tank

in the wild or pond a aro would never take food from the floor

in a tank the aro starts looking down for food in the wild or pond their would be no point in looking down as it wouldnt see anything :D

i have never let any aro i have owned take food from the tank base

I have 3 300 gallon tanks stacked in a rack one on top of each other. The aro on top tank got drop eye, I had to shuffle the fish every couple months. They do tend to look down at you when ever your in the room.

Very interesting thread. It does not really look like DE, maybe the young Red was only looking down a bit.

I could only imagine, taking the gf on vacation, Aro Fishing...

Maybe we can find a way to get some aro farmers on this thread eventually to get their opinions...

HEHEHEHE where are you going to find farmers Theo hehehe XD

Lots here in Manitoba :p

Great thread!

For the original question:
I have a very thin layer of fine gravel. about 60% coverage on the bottom. Just enough that the rays find it easier to move. The rays kick up the gravel so much I can't pick anything out of it during water changes, so all I do is drain tank.

It also kills the reflection. My aro seems to be alot more laid back when there is very little reflection. I've noticed with other aro species this seems to be true as well.

As for drop eye. I think its a number of things combined. Hard to pin it on one. I definatly think subtraight and diet go hand in hand for this.
