UV sterilizer Lamp ......

A normal uv sterilizer lamp should last roughly about 1 year, assuming that you would turn it on for 24 hours per day.

I think it is a "must have" for stingrays and arowanas.

It definitely can't hurt but I think with stingrays your money can be spent better on other things to aid in there keepiing. I find stingrays aren't as susceptable as other fish to most of the things a uv sterilizer will kill. The other thing I find is alot of people who use these are not using these properly in the first place or for only water clarity. I also don't know how accurate some of the manufacturers are if they say to replace a bulb after a year as the bulb will degrade over time making it less effective.
With aros I don't know and might be the best thing ever.
Not trying to start any arguments just not a big believer of them with rays.

My lamp is rated for 14 months... boasting the longest lamp life on the market...

Although it is still "on", it doesnt do the job it used to.

that same lamp has been running for about 13 months now. Im waiting to see if its going to burn out like every other UV bulb eventually does or not. Any other bulb ive had lasted 6-8 months.

This is not a necessity for Arowana or Rays, but does make the water extremely clear. The only benefit i use one for, is for that purpose.

Which reminds me... i need a new bulb... feels like i just bought the thing! lol

I'm installing one on my ray pond this weekend sheerly for the purpose of water clarity and algae reduction. I can see them being a necessity on a tank that houses new WC imports (i.e. importers holding tanks), but otherwise I side with Scott, they're a nice to have, not a NEED to have.

Yeah, my blub is out and to order a new one from the states is about $120. I thinknill hold off for now.

I want one for water clarity and photography. It's driving me nuts that I can't take decent pics in my big tank.

I can't remember remember what your outlets from your pumps are like but for me if I want crystal clear water to snap some pics I hang a filter sock over the outlet the night before. If you go to an oilfield supply company you can pick up a nice 1 micron one and your water will never look cleaner. If the outlets are under water just run up some temp pvc piping. :)

Oilfield supply company? Not in Manitoba, lol. The finest sock I can find is 5 microns.

Will a sock hold up to a flow rate of approx 3500gph? Yes, the outlets are underwater.

lol, I guess I'm way to use to alberta and an oilfield supply company on every corner. I use them on my 4500 gph pump which is teed so I can put on two, so each one is getting around half and I free flow into them into the sock and when the sock is plugged the water just overflows. There is no problem on them holding out at 3500 gph. They are a bit ugly to look at but they are only on for a short period to make the water sparke. 5 micron should be more than clear enough and depending on the amount of waste in your tank and the physical size of the sock it may plug in under 2 hours. My two filter socks I normally use for my pics are only 50 micron but are 7" x 32" and they plug in around a day and a half but my pics are no where near your quality and would suspect a 5 micron would make your day.
My piping is 2" and I can just dry fit my pvc fittings together on the outlet and they will hold together.
