This guy is sold now. Retail price for a fish like that is all over the map, from $1700-2500 being the main range. Fantasy had this fish listed for $3500 which actually made me blush a bit. A few years ago that was the going asking rate for a high end fish of this quality. Now you had better hope that fish has full GH to command that asking price. But then I don't own a store and have all those overhead costs either, so I guess its up to a store to ask whatever price they think the market will bear.
I find some buyers in BC are willing to pay a premium for a quality fish in which case it can sell for more than you might expect. For such cases it often helps to have the fish on hand and to invest some time in grooming the fish. Its important to note that this fish was a Merlion Ultimate grade Harmony XB. For a regular prestige grade I should be able to pass on savings.
I have learned over the years of two main ways to import aros - the more expensive high end ones or the less expensive regular grade ones. Provided the farm supplies what they promise everything works out fine. If a farm makes a mistake somehow it is critical for the farm to make amends for the customer. A good farm that wants to be in this competitive market long term will do that.
Dreamfish is the first farm I have dealt with that offers a split run of fish. The lower priced fish are of good quality and should be on par price-wise with what you can find in eastern Canada. The higher end fish are as good as you can get in my opinion. Thus, Dreamfish currently offers a full line of fish that appeal to all aspects of the market.
